History
Dudley, guarded by its ancient castle standing high above the town, is well known for its zoo, fossils (of the geological kind) and its industrial and mining heritage. It is said that, when standing on the Norman keep of the Castle, up to seven counties can be seen; counties that have inspired countless artists belonging to the Dudley Society of Artists (formerly the Dudley & District Art Circle) for over 80 years.
Records in the well-kept Minute Books give a most interesting and informative insight into the history of the Society since its formation in 1928 when C. V. Mackenzie, a well known artist and art teacher, together with other artists and craftsmen formed the Dudley & District Art Circle. From the beginning there was a membership of around 70.
In the early years the Art Circle promoted a wide range of arts and crafts, as well as painting. That title lasted for over 50 years, but in 1979 as the membership, still numbering about 70, consisted mainly of painters, it was decided to amend the constitution and change the name to The Dudley Society of Artists.
There are a number of professional artists and tutors among the present membership, some of whom have written articles for national art magazines such as The Artist and Leisure Painter. Others regularly demonstrate at art societies and tutor painting workshops. Generally the level of experience of the membership is extremely varied, but above all it is a friendly Society and everyone is made welcome.
